HD directly to SD MPEG2 = Better Quality?
by Mitch Sink on May 19, 2008 at 6:55:44 pm

[walter biscardi] "When we have to do a long HD to SD DVD, we will literally master the proect out to HD Tape, Recapture the project downconverted to SD via our Kona 3 and then run the project through Compressor. This is actually faster than letting it all happen through Compressor."

Hi Walter,

Quite a few feature films have been transferred to HD for release as SD DVD (long before they were releasing HD versions) because studios stated that the quality is substantially better when creating the SD DVD from HD. So I always assumed that compressing directly from the HD would give better quality. If this is incorrect please let me know.

Also there is a pretty extensive CC-MP review including price ($795) and some benchmarks here:

4 passes of DVCPro HD to SD MPEG2 on a Quad Core was a little faster than RT. Definitely easier and faster than going out to tape and recapturing. Maybe substantially better quality as well.

Best Wishes,

Mitch
