We considered that option. As a matter of fact, we routed a workstation to the HDCam deck, the HDCam deck to a DigiBeta deck and then a workstation to the DigiBeta deck. We played the sequence from FCP on the first workstation in HD and then captured it on the second workstation in SD. This allowed us to convert the sequence from HD to SD in realtime. Then we encoded to DVD using compressor after setting up Qmaster and rendered the final project in half the time. We were able to take a 120 minute HD sequence and convert it to MPEG 2 in about 180 minutes. Not bad considering we were looking at about 26 hours to compress HD to MPEG2.
The one issue that we did find was when we had SD video integrated into an HD sequence. When we did our capture described above, the video had bars and the SD had bars and pillar bars, which made it too small. We ended up cutting the SD and re-inserting the original SD footage and that corrected the issue.
It ended up being a good solution to a trying problem.
