Play commands for subtitles

The problem that I am having is, I want subtitles to be displayed by going to a menu screen and clicking on subtitles.

I have achieved this, however, when I go to the menu with no subtitles, the subtitles play with the video, even though the command is off.

If I use the remote control button for subtitles, I can then shut the subtitles off.

I was hoping to create this DVD, like the ones you rent with subtitles with lots of different languages, that you can choose with or without and not have to use the remote control to turn on/off the language selections, because too many people do not know that it exists on remotes.

In this case, we're using these subtitles like closed captions for the hearing impaired.
