My G5 PowerPC first came equipped with a Sony DVD burner and I ran into the same problems. Older DVD players wouldn't play DVD-Rs burnt with it, despite several tests. Yet when I burnt using an external Pioneer model - no problem. I convinced Apple to replace the drive and they did so with a Pioneer. Everything's worked perfectly since... Just a thought...
