Looking for recommendations for the best MPEG 2 encoder to purchase

Greetings,
I'm looking to upgrade my DVD authoring studio, and I'd like to get the best possible encoding solution.
I've used Compressor quite a bit and I think it's ok, but I'd like to know if there's anything better out there so I can achive better encoding results.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
Oh, I work in a dual platform environment, so i'm not opposed to a PC solution.
