CRASH!/Can't get started

Hi all,

I'm new to Shake and trying to learn my way around. When I try and open the tutorials, Shake crashes. When I try to render a fileout node, nothing happens. i get an "unexpectedly quit" notice for whatever application is trying to performing the render. Should i reinstall, update? any suggestions?
