I'm not sure exactly what you're seeing, but Viewers do have "Iconify Viewer" button in the upper right hand corner that minimize Viewers. To make 'em bigger again, either click Fit Viewer to Image or drag the bottom right corner.

If your problem is with the FileIn/roto (whatever) node thumbnails: Globals>guiControls>display thumbnails>Thumbsize (and you can also minimize and maximize the nodes in the node view with keyboard shortcuts; on the Mac the shortcut is Command + dragging with middle mouse button).
