Chuck -- first, make sure you figure out the file navigation process...

To find your desktop -- go to USERS then Cuck then Desktop.

To find external HDs... go to VOLUMES and there you'll see a list of drives.

Is that all you need? Remember too... Shake defaults to image sequence mode. So if you are looking for an image and you've got a lot in that folder of similar name, Shake will group that group as a 'movie'. Un-check the check at the bottom of the window that says Image Sequence and you'll get all the images like files.
