Sorry about any confusion, I'm not sure the way I diagramed the script is entirely clear...

I'm not sure of the exact split screen effect you need to achive so my example is only a variation on the example you gave.

I don't think I have ever had occasion to use a viewport node, and while it might be very useful in some cases, it is certainly not necessary in all. In any case, I don't think it is of much use here.

Here may be a better way to achieve what you are looking for...

filein two different pieces of footage. Attach a crop node to one. In the image viewer, drag the right crop border over so only the left hand side of the image shows. Attach this to the foreground input of an over node. Attach the other footage to the background of the same over node. You will run into problems if you start adjusting the left hand border of the crop node so this isn't something that will work in every case. A window node might work better than the crop node, depending upon what you are doing.

In any case, you will then need to connect a fileout node after the over node to output your file.
