Keith,
I neglected to mention that I also tried the aformentioned Smoothcam, and had success. I shoot plain o'l mini dv @ 29.97. Interlaced. I had a handheld exterior shoot that has bothered me forever. It wasn't terrible, but was noticeably shakey. I pretty much followed the Captain's tutorial to the letter. I never touched any of the settings other what he described. One thing that I did do differently, was no roundtripping with FCP. I exported the clip out of FCP as a self-contained movie, and brought it into Shake via Filein. One thing that Mike cautioned is to check your export preferences. On Fileout, I noticed that when selecting QT, it defaulted to Animation Codec, not NTSC DV. Once I exported the QT (to a project folder), I re-imprted it into FCP. Played fine. and looked like I used a tripod (which I should have).
Again, OK workarounds- love to hear from some hard core users!
