When you first launch a project in STP, STP needs to write all the waveform overlays for each clip. On larger projects this can take a while. As you've seen, STP can and will lock up if you try to edit before it is done scanning all the audio clips.

Best to launch STP, then go grab a coffee while it does its thing.
