Add non-apple created sound effects to muli-track project

hello There,
I am beginning to try to use Sound Track Pro. I have Final Cut Studio 2, with all its associated programs. I am pretty comfortable with FCP 6, etc.
I would like to create a multi-track project. I would most likely "Send to" Sound track from FCP for one of my sequences. I do not see how I might add an aif file (or an mp3 or wav) sound effect to a track in the project. The "import" feature only wants AAF files. Is there a way to get an aif file (converted from a mp3 or wav via Quicktime) into a track in a multi-track project file?
One more question - can I create an empty multi-track project, and add audio files to that? Again these files might be aif or mp3 or wav. I would most likely convert the non-aif files to aif via QT Pro.
Thanks,
Eric
