For sure STP has many annoying bugs left in it. But as FCP 1 was pretty sketchy, it will pay later on if you to master STP now.

FCP became really good with version 3 (and after a few bug fixes). You can see that STP will grow into something really good too, it's already evolved A LOT from v1 (which had unmarked meters, wtf??!!).

As for your problems, I'm new to STP too, when I get weird bugs like these, I re-check EVERYTHING and go through the whole workflow 2,3... 5 times if need be, and I always end up finding what I'm doing wrong. And when you don't (which is rare), then it's a real bug and send it to Apple.
