In answer to your first part - you can use WD drives as long as the unit is out of warranty (Drives from us go through a rigorous screening process, and we would consider most store-bought drives to be our rejects)...On the second part: Check the capacity of the drives versus your firmware/model level. If you are using U160, then if the WDs are 120GB or less, you need 0512 firmware, otherwise if they are greater than 120GB, you need E512 firmware. If you are using U320, the drives have to be 120GB or greater, and make sure you have ENG17B firmware. On the U320, drives less than 120GB might or might-not work...

Make sure the drives are all set to "Master" and not cable-select. The series of beeps indicates problems with any drives (i.e. the number of beeps is the "bad" drive).
