Transfer of SxS material using SBAC-US10 to Mac incredibly slow... why?

Hi

I use an SBAC-US10 SxS card reader to transfer material to my Mac. Sometimes as iMac, sometimes a MacBook Pro. I've tried going straight into the computer and plugging into an external hard drive. But whatever I do, a 32GB always takes almost 3 hours to transfer. And that's just transfer, not convert or anything else.
What am I doing wrong?
Any solutions or suggestions welcome.
