I've seen EX and F900 footage intercut for a street scene at night and I was hard pressed to tell the difference.

Turn off the detail setting on the EX and you should see a significant improvement in your soft image. Then turn the detail setting back on but severely limit the effect to the point that it's as good as turned off. The detail setting should actually be left on because, unlike some of the other high end Sony cameras, turning off detail on the EX cameras also turns off other settings as well.
