Glad to here that trashing the prefs is helping. Like I said the other stuff is kind of voodoo, but you can use disk utility to repair permissions and to boot into single user mode just restart while holding down command and S. It will boot too an all text screen then there will be fsck -fy instructions, all you do is type that in. Once it is done you can type reboot and you are good to go.
