Just a quick update - I trashed the preferences and started my next project and have not experienced any crashes. Quite honestly I will have to look a little deeper to follow the other advice you gave, as I am relatively new to the Mac environment. I will look into these suggestions - but at present the 1st piece of advice seems to be helping.
