FCP and avi

Warning: I'm an extreme newbie, having begun my first FCP project yesterday, and it's not off to an auspicious start.
I imported some .avi files, standard def. captured on a Windows laptop, found the playback to be NOT smoothe, and got the message to use Media Manager to recompress in a more efficient format. Any guidance on what that format would be? The project will be distributed on standard def. single layer DVD.
I'm using FCP 6 on a PowerMac dual G5, 256 MB VRAM, and OS X 10.4.11, which I thought would be adequate. But what do I know? This is my first Mac after 20+ years of PCs, editing with Premiere Pro 2. The aforementioned footage was captured as type-2 DV, which Premiere is happier with than type 1.
Went to the DFCPUG meeting last night--a very high horsepower group!! So I hope my very basic questions don't make you all groan, and thanks in advance for any guidance,
Bob
