well if you do more compositing than editing, then i doubt smoke is the tool for you. Im sure it has all of combustions features and much more but it aint a flame, in that case NUKE is definately the best option for you. Save that cash. If its motion gfx then AE or motion will be fine.
Combustion really breaks my heart, we could have had a desktop flame by now.
The last time i touched flint was back in the late 90's so i have no idea how it works now. I doubt very much there is backdraft for Mac YET. i aasked a similar question a few days ago, got no answer.
Look smoke is not for everyone, but for someone like me who edits and composits it will make sense, but im taking my time to see how the cookie crumbles.
