As has been mentioned, you have an old machine. You also didn't say if it was running with a Targa or Matrox capture (not display card). In any case, here goes:

-In the Windows Control Panel, make sure you have system sounds (I think it was) set for NO SOUNDS.

-Make sure you're rendering (and capturing) to the correct path in your media drive(s), and not to a system (C) drive.

-Make sure you have NO virus software running. This could cause problems.

-If you're on a Targa system, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Targa RTX/DTX/SDX video card drivers. I don't remember if the Matrox Digisuite drivers requires a complete uninstall of its drivers or even the software. If you have a Digidesktop card, you can look in the manual about uninstalling and reinstalling this (it's what gives you full motion playback on both monitors).

-You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the edit* software. However make sure you have ALL the necessary disks you'll need. You will be in world of pain if you don't. Even then, it would be a last resort with software this old. And unsupported.

-Contact Lyn Norstadt over at the Matrox Axio forum privately. He was an excellent edit* dealer who may have some answers or resources that might help. Make sure you're more specific in the above, as well as EXACTLY which software version of edit you're running (6.01, 6.02, etc.).

-Finally, tell your station that it's incredible foolish to waste the time and energy of your engineering and post team trying to troubleshoot the issues inherent in a system that's been dead for over 8 years. Especially when solutions from Apple or Adobe are downright cheap in comparison.

Good luck.
