Paint: Initialising

I can't get my new copy of combustion 2008 to work, its quite frustrating as i originally trained on combustion 3 and because of varous nightmares with osx I switched to after effects 7 and cs3... anyhow, i decided to purchase combustion 2008 for 1000 odd euro and it won't work on my macbook pro...
I installed it and registered etc and it jus hangs on start up, when it goes 'initializing paint' it just hangs and i get the dreaded colour wheel of doom... I've tried everything suggested on previous posts, like cleaning out the preferences and everything i could find in the library folder, combustion user data, everything... even set up a new user with admin privileges and reinstalling etc. Autodesk support said pretty much the same thing but no joy, i'm almost on the verge of asking for a refund... has anyone ever found out how to fix this problem and if so could they let us know how we could fix it?
Thanks
Sean
