AFAIK, Combustion v2.1 wouldn't import Illustrator files at all. I'm pretty sure that functionality only came in Version 3. In any case, an old version wouldn't work with CS3 files because that format didn't exist at the time. I can't find it written anywhere but I am pretty sure that Combustion2008 only support up to CS2 version files. I always export Illustrator stuff to use in other applications as Version 8 files, as that has all the features I might need in Max, Combustion, CorelDraw or Xara and is pretty much foolproof.
I'm a contractor for Autodesk at the moment but, unless otherwise stated, all opinions expressed here are my own.
