Hopefully it is something that can be resolved quickly. I just built a new Mac with Combustion 2008 on it, but haven't used it much lately, mainly because I also just built a new PC with Combustion 2008 on it, and since PC's are my preference, I use it primarily. I am training somebody on the Mac, so I'll let you know if I run into issues. I ahve hod some issues on the PC side using 2008 with importing video clips with certain codecs. I think this has more to do with the thumbnail view, so I have bypassed it by changing the preferences to use windows file browsing instead.
Another thing you might try since you have access to a PC version of Combustion is to open your 2.1 files on the PC, and resave them with 2008. This might bypass some issues if there is some incompatibility on the Mac side. You shouldn't have to do this, but sometimes a workaround is better than the alternative. I was working on a client's machine, which was a PC with Premiere Pro CS2, who then upgraded to a Mac, and wanted to be able to work on his old projects on his Mac version of CS3, only to find out that the Mac version of CS3 wasn't backwards compatible with CS2 files, so we had to open the files on a PC using CS3, and resave them, then bring them back onto the Mac to work with. It was a little bit of a pain, but we only had to do it on a couple dozen projects, and once it was done, it wasn't a big deal.
Hope this helps,
Heath
