The problem you will run into is that each time you render out a file you will be using lossy compression. This means that you will lose video quality that can't be retrieved. By using a lossless codec for an intermediary format then you will only lose quality once (on final output), instead of 2 or 3 times. You are the only one who can decide what is the most important file size or final output quality.
