Actually the best way to go about it is use a white color (checker with both colors white works great). This way the labels will catch lighting, shadows, etc, then set the Texture mode to multiply (if you don't do this everything that occupies the gbuffer area will be replaced). Using this approach also eliminates the aliasing issue you will usually run into.
