you should read up on the texture map replace operator in conjunction with RPF files. one issue that has come up in the past is a slight aliasing at the edges, vbut in the case of a flat tv screen you could have an overlay pass of a slight besel/frame on the TV that hides any artifacts, if present.
top layer = frame with hole in it
bottom layer = RPF with texture swapped out.
if you make the original texture a flat black and then use additive to do the replace, it will be the full, new image replacing black. you should also be able to give a slight specularity to the screen and have it remain.
