paint out nightmare = hair loss

i'm a combustion user who is trying to get through HD string paints with great difficulty. I've done all possible to speed up my machine but it's chugging ever so slowly and crashing regularly. It's taking far far far too long.

Does anyone have any best practise workflow for dealing with HD? Am thinking of working with a Motion JPEG A to do the paint out, then replacing the footage with the HD footage and hitting render... (?!)

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!
