In my honest opinion you can never know enough. The more programs you are familiar with, the more marketable you will become. I've never found it a waste to spend time learning a program for a one gig thing. That's just another tool in my compositing arsenal. I do however tend to focus more of my time on a few choice programs to "master" them. But there is nothing wrong with "cheating" on the program you love for a gig or two in order to bring in the cash. :)
