I can't compete with Andy on helping you but I used the Matrox MXO2 mini max for one year without a single issue. Go figure, before getting my current Mac Pro I used it for a while on a hackintosh and it worked flawlessly even there on a machine with chips not supported by Apple.
In my opinion the MXO2 is a very good product and you should debug your problems. After that it will be source of great satisfactions.
With the Max option I encode h264 at lightspeed. Really cool.
Right now I use the newest FW and drivers and it is even better than one year ago. I even use it from MPEG streamclip (I don't think it's supported) and do brute force transcoding at speed that is just incredible.
