Re: Matrox mini live transcode possibility?

[lynne robinson] "- I want to transcode to Cineform or Pro Res at the point of live capture; can I do this without FCP on the laptop?"

Nope. And if you want to do this on a Laptop you need something like the AJA I/O HD. That has a built in ProRes encoder. Mac Laptops don't have the power to handle the ProRes encoding, only the towers do. Well, the laptops can handle encoding to 23.98 720p, but not 1080i. On a laptop with the MXO2 and MXO2 mini you are limited to DVCPRO HD, because your external drive will have to be Firewire 800, and you cannot capture uncompressed to external

[lynne robinson] "- Would I need to use an external (esata) RAID to process and store these files, or is it ok to RAID the laptop's internal discs instead? "

RAIDs don't process...they are storage only. And you can play 1080i 29.97 ProRes on a single internal SATA drive...no raid needed.
