Exchanged MXO for MXO2
by Ri Stewart on Jan 4, 2009 at 10:27:29 am

A big Moo to all

I just wanted to share the info I learned in the process of trying to setup low budget, yet quality, color correcting in our studio for a few documentaries we are working on.

We shoot in 720p24 on a JVC HD101. We work Proress 422 in the sequence, and work on both laptop and Macpro.

The MXO, while working like they advertised, had a few bugs that were a problem for us. The first, is by using your DVI port, whenever you switch from your dual screen FCP/Motion workflow to grab a Finder, a browser, etc,... both screens would do the blue flash we all know while everything resyncs. I understand why this is required, but it makes moving from FCP to browser extremely time consuming, as well as annoying.

The sound also cut out. I tried sending our stereo outs to the MXO, and there was an inconsistent drop out that happened every few seconds.

I was, however able to calibrate an inexpensive GE 37" LCD with the system. It looked great! If I could say anything about it, it appeared over-saturated. But how do I really know if these colors are accurate??

Realizing theatrical release is getting more and more possible... we have decided to flow this work another way.

The MXO2 uses a PCI card from both laptop and MacPro, leaving both sets of video for your editing. That should solve the whole flash problem.

We also found a local electronics dealer who sells Mitsibushi Diamond LCD's and is certified to calibrate them. We figure this will give us a baseline reference, as well as the visual from the MXO2 calibration.

It's ending up costing about $3k for this solution... but we also end up with a client monitor out of the deal-e-o.

Any thoughts to this roundabout conclusion?
