Hi Gary,
Yes this is possible when editing on a Macbook Pro. If you are working in FCP with the MXO2 and wish to disconnect it, make sure that you first set your external video to off under View-->External Video. Once this is set you can go ahead and power off the Express 34 card by clicking the express card icon in the top right of your display and choosing "power off card". Once the icon dissappears you can now uplug the express 34 card. To bring back the MXO2 simply reconnect the express card and set your external video setting back to all frames in FCP.
