Raids, raids everywhere - and now I drank the cool aid.

After much researching and with the help of my fellow *editors and others, especially Bob Zellin, I committed my big bucks to a Maxxdigital 6 terabyte raid. First impressions are extremely positive – great service from Maxx Entertainment Digital. The unit arrived and was incredibly fast and easy to setup. Pop the drives into the box, snap the pci card into the Mac, download a utility file and literally within 5 minutes I had 4.8 useable terabytes, raid 5, reading at about 515 MB/s and writing at 410 MB/s(using the Blackmagic Test Utility.) Considering that I have a 14 disk fibre channel X-Raid on my G5 system of equivelent storage size(that cost triple the price of the maxx digital system, in 2004 dollars) that tops out at about 230 MB/s, I’m extremely impressed. Haven’t tried popping a drive out in the middle of a capture session yet, but it’s been looping material for a few days without a hitch. A very good deal indeed.
