NAB is a lot like New Years Eve and The Rat Pack

I don't enjoy Vegas and what it represents; I don't enjoy enjoy boozing, gambling, or seeing mediocre shows. I do enjoy the company of friends who share the same tools in their work."

I can't stand mediocre shows, but boozing and gambling are AOK with me. However, I can't fault either Avid or The Creative Cow for passing on NAB. How could I, I've been passing on it myself for several years running.

While NAB is a nice place to catch a quick glimpse of old friends and new technology, for me, the "catch a glimpse and try to hear over the loud din" aspect of NAB is very tedious and very frustrating, and just not a productive use of time and capital. Its a lot like New Years Eve, the one night each year when amatuers go out drinking, and like the Rat Pack, a Vegas legend now stale and moth-eaten.

So, even though perception is everything, and Avid's decision to abandon NAB may feed right into that nagging feeling that they too are headed for the big exit, I can't blame 'em.
