If you're using FCP, then I would suggest the following:
I know you said you wanted to edit in SD with the HDX900 footage, but I would suggest that you just rent a DVCPROHD deck and digitize those tapes over firewire. Then just edit at DVCPROHD.
Then for finishing, you just need to send the sequence to your finishing house or make a tape master and include an EDL for them. They won't have to go back to the original source tapes because what you're editing with is a data clone of the same info on the tapes.
