XDCam would indeed be a good choice.
I think P2 type media management could be a nightmare in primitive conditions. My first choice would be DVCProHD...robust, reliable and you can carry a ton of those small tapes. Add a decent HDV cam and you're good to go.
Hey--Dan Rather did it with lowly betacam years ago and came back with the story. He also looked very convincing dressed up like a Mujahadeen, too.
