As far as Liquid's future goes. This is the final release of Liquid as we know it. A patch is coming to fix some issues, especially problems with DX10 video cards, but that is it. A new product to replace Liquid is in the works and due out in about a year or so. Basically, it will be a very different product from what we have now and no real information on what it will be like is available yet. It is being aimed at the "videographer" market according to Jan Piros of Pinnacle. Not sure exactly what that means.
Avid is currently offering a $1000 discount to those who want to trade up to Avid Media Composer from Liquid. You need to contact an Avid reseller to take advantage of this offer. You cannot get the discount offer through the Avid estore. This is an upgrade to Media Composer Ver. 3 which has just been released and also includes Sonic DVDit, Sorenson Squeeze and Boris Continuum Complete in the package. That makes this a very good deal if you want to move to Media Composer. The offer expires at the end of September. Both the PC and MAC versions are included so you do not need BootCamp to run it.
