If it literally CAN NOT be done with battery, then it won't work. If it's not recommended, that's another story.

Usually firmware updates can be performed as long as the system sees a fully charged battery. The only reason that A/C power is required instead of battery is that if the battery happened to run out while in the middle of the update, your camera would be bricked.

Of course you could just as easily have a power outage in the middle of your update and that too would brick your camera. It's funny, because with the GH2 they specifically recommending using a full battery and NOT A/C power, for that very reason. With a full battery, your chance of power interruption are actually much less than with A/C power.

So you could try it with a fully charged battery and see if it will work. If not, then "can not" really means "can not".
