panasonic dvc80 - won't import

I tried to import video from my Panasonic DVC80 using a DV/ 6 prong firewire cable. I have a Mac with iMovie. My computer simply will not read it. I have the camera in VCR mode. Is there another mode/setting that I am missing? I would really appreciate any tips/suggestions.
