Strange camera smear - cold weather?

Folks,
Am going to try to attach two pictures here.
Yesterday was shooting a lacrosse game in real cold weather -- (below freezing -- high wind).
In the third quarter an odd black smear suddenly obscured the lens (see '3rd Q.png').
I thought at first something physical was in front of the lens but that was not the case.
The second picture ('HAND.png) shows my hand passing in front of the lens -- and the tornado-shaped smear would partially go away, and then return once my hand was removed from in front of the lens.
It shut me down of course -- but when I got back in-house, the smear was gone, leading me to think it was the cold.
Anybody ever see anything like this?
Thank you,
JR
