HDX900 - star filter look on headlights and shart light sources

This may just be the nature of the beast, but last night, while I was out trying to capture some good thunderstorm shots at dusk on my new HDX900, I was a bit distracted by the "four-point star filter" look that all of the tiny points of light (headlight, streetlights, et.) exhibited. I did not have my shutter engaged. Was shooting at 1080 60i. Is there a way to minimize this effect? I have another CCD camera - a Sony DSR570 - and don't remember the effect being this pronounced, but of course it's an SD camera.
Any words of wisdom appreciated.
