Varicam Menu Settings Training

I'm a videographer here in Chicago and I've been getting a lot of jobs shooting HD on the Varicam and the Sony F900. I know how to light and expose for film and I pretty much apply the same rules to these two HD formats. Everytime I do one of these gigs though I'm on as a 2nd Camera or B Unit cinematographer. Basically what happens is the main cinematographer takes one of those memory cards and puts it in my camera to match his. I haven't taken any formal training or been able to find any literature that would explain how to use the matrixes in these two cameras and set them both to get certain looks. I don't understand what the master pedestal is and things of this nature. Can anyone recommend some books or some workshops that would demystify all these things for me? Thanks for the help. CIAO for now!!!
