External hard drive for Sony HVR-HD1000U

External hard drive for Sony HVR-HD1000U

I have the Sony HVR-HD1000U and I would like to add a recording unit to it, but the external hard drive for it (Sony HVR-DR60) is $1400, which is not only impossible for me, but also ridiculous for just a hard drive, no matter how fancy it might be. If anybody has this camera, or uses an external standalone hard drive with its own power source, can you tip me on a better solution?
