News: Sony Adds New Automation Capabilities To MVS Series Production Switchers
by Cow News Droid on Apr 15, 2008 at 6:22:29 pm

(Las Vegas NAB--April 15, 2008) Sony is continuing to enhance its MVS line-up of multi-format video production switchers with the addition of studio automation functionality for its MVS-8000A and MVS-8000G models.

The new automation option, model ELC-MVS01, is designed for integration into high-definition and standard-definition news control room systems. The ELC designation stands for "Enhanced Live-production Control System" because it adds more efficiency to existing control room workflows.

The system uses one simple-to-operate graphical user interface to control on-air devices including robotic cameras and audio mixers. It also takes advantage of existing MOS gateway interfaces.

“MVS switchers can always be driven with a traditional control panel for breaking news,” said Rob Willox, director of Sony Electronics’ content creation group. “With the new automation option, stations have the freedom to increase their frequency of newscasts with more weekend or overnight productions, while utilizing their staffs more efficiently. This lets producers automate their workflows without having to change their operational style.”

The automation option is designed to work as an ActiveX window within newsroom computer systems, such as iNews® or ENPS. This allows producers to continue building their rundowns in the newsroom computer, and then simply drag-and-drop pre-programmed live production command templates into their news stories.

In the control room, the automation playlist interface follows the vertical layout of newsroom control system, and allows status monitoring to check for production disruptions. As rundown changes occur, a real-time synchronization updates the automation playlist so newscasts can be modified on-the-fly and operational errors can be reduced. This intuitive and efficient design allows for today’s visually complex newscasts to be controlled with minimal staffing requirements.

The ELC-MVS01 automation option is expected to be available in late 2008, with pricing to be determined.
