News: Base Camp Studios Goes to Venus And Chicago for Andy Davis
by Cow News Droid on Mar 25, 2008 at 6:45:05 pm

(Atlanta/Los Angeles--March 25, 2008) Base Camp Studios recently teamed up with recording artist Andy Davis to create a pair of visual effects heavy music videos.

The first was for Andy’s beautiful ballad “Chicago, City of Shoulders.” Director, Steve Kuhn wanted to capture that moment when you fall in love at first sight. “Have you ever locked eyes with a complete stranger and just wished that you could know them? Often, because of circumstance we never get that chance. This video is about what happens when you do get that chance.”

“Chicago” was not shot in Chicago but on a sound stage in Atlanta. “More important than shooting real for real we wanted to create this dreamy feeling – a visual to match his feelings as Andy walks the streets and tells us his story.” Steve traveled to Chicago and for several days shot hundreds of background plates. Back at Base Camp Studios, all of those images were chopped up and manipulated to make our own version of the city. “Chicago” was shot in high definition and in post-production had several hundred layers to composite. “We created everything. We have our own little render farm but still, the renders were gigantic,” says Steve.

The second video is called “Earth and Venus.” Also about love, it’s more of the unattainable kind. Director Steve Kuhn chose to illustrate this with Andy Davis in the desert at night, singing up to the planet Venus. “Venus is a beautiful woman, trapped in the heavens and she resists Andy’s singing. Eventually, Andy is forced to take drastic action to show Venus his love – in person. As you can imagine there are some heavy visual effects involved.”

Base Camp Studios role in both videos was to handle all production, animation, compositing and editing.

“Base Camp is unique,” says Creative Director, Steve Kuhn, “We have written and produced hundreds of spots for various networks, handling all production and post as well. That works great in music videos because we can keep costs down and keep the same director’s vision all the way through.”

The music videos and a pair of behind the scenes videos can be seen at http://www.basecampstudios.com.

In addition to Andy Davis videos, Base Camp Studios has been busy creating the Power Rangers Jungle Fury launch and campaign for Toon Disney. Base Camp Studios also created a ninety-second trailer for the new show Aaron Stone, also on Toon Disney.
