NextComputing Releases Portable Broadcast Graphics System, Featuring Magicsoft
by Aaron Sherman on Jan 15, 2008 at 5:17:22 pm

Nashua, N.H., January 15, 2008NextComputing, the leader in high-performance mobile, modular computers, has partnered with Blackmagic Design and MagicSoft to design a turnkey portable broadcast graphics system. Boasting several major graphics systems providers and high-profile sports broadcasters as customers, NextComputing’s mobile on-air graphics solution offers many of the features found in more expensive character generator systems at a fraction of the cost. Now the same eye-catching graphics and real-time information seen in professional broadcast productions are within the reach of more modest budgets, such as high school, college, and community athletic organizations, local governments, and churches.

NextComputing’s newest turnkey mobile broadcast graphics system is a combination of powerful hardware and software, designed to work out-of-the-box and fit into any production setup.

Real-time, data-driven graphics are provided by MagicSoft’s UltraRed software, an easy-to-use, broadcast-quality graphics generator and playout server. UltraRed’s impressive graphics engine allows simultaneous creation, preview and playback of logos, tickers, crawls, clocks, and video clips in both SD and HD. UltraRed can handle both analog and digital signals, and internal or external keying.

The core of the solution is NextComputing’s NextDimension Pro HD, a briefcase-sized portable computer, featuring an integrated 17-inch hi-res widescreen display and AMD Opteron™ processors. The NextDimension “flextop” system is lightweight and designed for travel, allowing operators to create and preview graphics before an event, then easily plug in and go to air. DeckLink™ broadcast video boards from Blackdesign Design provide flexible I/O options to fit any production pipeline, from component/composite analog up to 10-bit SDI. Powerful and affordable GeForce™ GPU’s from NVIDIA handle the graphics and video processing for UltraRed. Best of all, the NextDimension system is completely modular, allowing users to upgrade from SD to HD without having to throw away old hardware.

"We are extremely pleased that NextComputing has chosen the Blackmagic Design products for integration into their Portable Broadcast Graphics System featuring Magicsoft's UltraRed software," says Dan May, President of Blackmagic Design, USA. “NextComputing is really at the top of the pack when it comes to mobile systems. The combination of our three products makes a statement that is hard to ignore - Mobile CG solutions featuring incredible performance and capabilities are available at a very cost competitive price point."

"It's great to be working with NextComputing,” says Cristi Mirea, CEO of MagicSoft. “They have incredible hardware and an excellent approach to an understanding of the market for our application."
