News: Online Training Leader lynda.com Announces Release of Web Accessibility Principles

Over Six hours of Tutorials on Building Accessible Sites

(Ventura, California, 11/12/07)lynda.com, the leader in self-paced digital media and design training, today introduced Web Accessibility Principles.

Accessibility on the web has been an issue for over a decade, and it remains a crucial—but often overlooked—element of web design. Instructor Zoe Gillenwater explains the concept of accessibility as it applies to the web, and describes how it affects the audience. She also covers how to set up accessibility testing, and how to apply accessibility principles to new and existing sites using standards-compliant markup and CSS. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.

"Many web developers are intimidated by the topic of accessibility, and don't realize how much is accomplished just by writing semantic, standards-based HTML," notes Lynda Weinman, CEO of lynda.com. "Zoe's training is organized perfectly to help developers fill in the remaining blanks, test the accessibility of their work, and add these practices to their everyday workflows."

Anyone with an internet connection can access Web Accessibility Principles by subscribing to lynda.com’s Online Training Library®. A separate CD-ROM version of Web Accessibility Principles is planned later this month.

Subscriptions to the lynda.com Online Training Library® start at $25 a month, and provide access to over 22,000 movie tutorials covering more than 320 technology career tools, software applications, and techniques. Subscribers can access any of the computer-based training courses at their convenience. Multi-user subscriptions are also available for companies and institutions seeking to provide education and training to groups.

About Zoe Gillenwater
Zoe Gillenwater is an experienced web designer, project manager, and technical author, active in the web standards community. She uses her expert knowledge of CSS, XHTML, Dreamweaver, accessibility, and visual design in all aspects of her career. Zoe loves teaching web design as much as she loves learning and doing it herself. As a partner at Community MX, a web development training site, she contributes articles and tutorials on a variety of web design topics. She focuses on CSS, XHTML, Dreamweaver, and accessibility, as well as web page templates and forum support. Zoe is also the editor for Adobe's CSS Advisor website. Due to her involvement with accessibility and other web standards, Zoe was invited to be a member of the Adobe Task Force of the advocacy group Web Standards Project (WaSP). As a government employee, she became skilled in not only ensuring Section 508 accessibility compliance for all her projects, but also going beyond to meet many of the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative WCAG guidelines. Zoe sees web accessibility as a web development best practice in its own right, regardless of rules and regulations.
