I am going to put a plug in here for the Cows Kino Gil, as I know Kino would not. Below is the press release AND this film did win 1st place at the festival. Congrats go to Kino and his team, can't wait to see it here in the states.
The mixed-media sci-fi film "THE OUTSIDER" (2008) starring Catie Boles has been selected for screening in the INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ENGLAND in Leicestershire, near the Sherwood Forest of Robin Hood fame, a festival created by the same folks who have made the Egypt, Wales and South Africa film fests sucesses in the field.
The film further has been nominated this April to the "HEART" award in the category of Science Fiction. A combination of live action and retro/anime-stylized 3D CGI animation, the film tells the story of the war betweeen the Outsiders and the Humans and how a single unarmed, pregnant woman represented the human side against a fully armed cyborg in a contest for the life of a whole race. It also lets us explore the value of being different.
THE OUTSIDER is the creation of Costa Rican filmmaker/animator Joaquin 'Kino' Gil, working from his KiNO.digital CGI production boutique in the Marina del Rey area of Los Angeles, a pioneer in cost-effective CGI solutions for production.
"The core of the story was a very intense improvisation by Catie and I during a shoot of five days in the Joshua Tree desert in 2004 after reading and discussions over the archetypal myth of the Champion, which I wanted to explore. Then, back in LA, the task was to bring all that to visuals. Some processes and solutions took years, just in research. The alien itself went through many designs before settling in one that emphasize its contrast with the woman: hard to soft, metal to flesh, destruction to creation..."
Set to a moving electroacoustic soundtrack by Costarican composer Sergio Sasso, recorded and mixed in his Santa Ana studio, the film will be showing in selected festivals in the US in the near future.
