fire and alpha

Using AE I am attempting to create an animation where I simulate a logo being burned onto wood for a wooden bat manufacturer. I have reversed my logo alpha, allowing the fire layer to be seen through the logo however the fire of course stays within the confines of the alpha. I would like to have flames extend beyond the alpha, creating a branding with fire type of effect.
Because I do not use AE daily I'm stuck in a bit of a corner. Any suggestions?
Thanks All!
